Famous champagne houses will be shut down this Christmas, as budget supermarket Fizz came out on top in taste tests.

Champagnes from Co-op and Aldi have beaten a prestige brand by double the price in Christmas tests.

And it was a particularly good festive season for Co-op, which also came in first place with its mince pies.

The results prove that shoppers can celebrate without blowing the budget. Consumer Champion Which one? asked a panel of four wine experts to blind taste a selection of sparkling beer.

Co-op’s Les Pionniers champagne, priced at £22.75, proved to be a corker, scoring 85 per cent and being named Best Buy.

The experts praised the soft creaminess, the pleasant freshness and the long, savory aftertaste.

The panel said this fizz showcased the flavors of fresh fruit against a ‘savory backbone’.

These bottles were rated higher than the most expensive champagne the panel tasted.

The £47 Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Brut Champagne received a score of 77 percent.

It had a classy and fresh taste, but the judges said there were much cheaper champagnes that were just as – if not more – delicious.

Other supermarket offers were a hit with the experts, including Asda’s Veuve Olivier & Fils Secret de Cave Champagne (£28) and Waitrose’s Brut Champagne (£21.99).

Natalie Hitchins, from Which?, said: ‘Our taste tests have produced excellent supermarket champagnes and cheaper alternatives that offer quality and value for money and more than rival a famous champagne house.’
