PREMIER LEAGUE giants are reportedly ready for chaos next season.

That is with Champions League matches being played on the same day as Carabao Cup matches.

Europe's elite competition will undergo a major change next season as it expands from 32 teams to 36.

The group stages have been abolished and the teams are instead bundled into one giant table for the opening round.

The eight best teams advance directly to the last sixteen.

While the next 16 knockout matches will be played to determine the final eight teams.

However, it means that teams will now play eight first round matches instead of the previous six.

And the Mail claims that there is currently a match in store for every Champions League team that reaches the Carabao Cup semi-finals next season.

The domestic competition becomes a two-match tie at that stage.

And according to a provisional fixture list from the EFL, one of the legs will coincide with a Champions League match.

It is noted that EFL sources insist the match date has not yet been finalised.

The only way to avoid a clash of matches is to make the Carabao semi-final a one-legged affair.

And if the current date remains, it could force every Premier League team in the Champions League to field a team of children for the Carabao Cup.

Liverpool famously put their youth side under the tutelage of then U23 boss Neil Critchley during their Carabao quarter-final against Aston Villa five years ago.

That's because Jurgen Klopp's senior stars were in Doha at the time as they competed in the Club World Cup.

And it remains to be seen whether there will be any wiggle room when the new Champions League format comes into play.

The EFL and UEFA declined to comment.
