He made 179 appearances for Chelsea after joining from Feyenoord for £2.25 million, helping them win the FA Cup, League Cup and Cup Winners' Cup.

But after the rise of Carlo Cudicini, the importance of the stop decreased.

He played just twice in the Premier League in the 2002–03 season.

At the end of the campaign he was released on a free transfer at the age of 36.

Instead of hanging up his gloves, he managed to find another club in England.

He dropped a division to join Stoke City.

Initially first choice, the Dutchman faced competition in his second campaign.

In his third he lost his place altogether, with Steve Simonsen taking on first-team duties.

After less than a full season he was sacked as goalkeeping coach by RS chairman Gianni Paladini – and has not worked in English football since.

He spent four years as goalkeeping coach of Dutch side RKC Waalwijk after joining in 2010, before joining amateur club DHC Delft.

In 2018 he became a goalkeeper coach at VOC Rotterdam, after playing for five years as a player at neighboring Sparta.

De Goey was also featured on a Sparta podcast entitled “Sparta naar Vooren!”

Now 57, he appears clean-shaven, with thinning hair on the sides of his head.

In addition to his other responsibilities, De Goey also runs a goalkeeper school.

The academy is located in Berkel, about a 15-minute drive from Rotterdam.
