A fire breaks out at a chemical factory in Surat

The fire broke out around 2 a.m. at the chemical factory in Sachin GIDC industrial area after an explosion in a large tank following leakage of flammable chemicals stored in it, Surat chief fire officer Basant Pareek said.

24 injured, hospitalized for treatment

“At least 24 workers were injured and rushed to a hospital where they were treated,” he said. It was not immediately clear how many workers were at the plant when the incident occurred, he said. “The blast caused a fire in the three-storey building of the factory and engulfed the entire unit,” another official said. More than a dozen fire engines were rushed to the spot and efforts were on to control the fire, he said.

Gas cylinder explosion in Mumbai, five houses collapse

In a similar news update, there was a gas cylinder explosion in Mumbai, causing five houses to collapse, injuring a family of four. The incident took place at 7.50 am at the old barracks near the golf club in Chembur area. A gas cylinder exploded in a house, leading to the collapse of four to five two-storey buildings, an official said. Eleven people were rescued from the collapsed houses, the official said, adding that four persons have been admitted to the government-run Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi so far. Fire brigade, police, civilian staff, ambulance service and other agencies were mobilized.

After the rescue, four injured victims from one family were taken to Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi for treatment. They are identified as: Vikas Ambhore, 50, Ashok Ambhore, 27, Savita Ambhore, 47, Rohit Ambhore, 29.
