A Brisbane family has been left scared to live in their own suburb after a terrifying encounter with a young teenager who pointed what appeared to be a gun at them.

Simrandeep Kuar and her husband were returning to their home in Holmview, in the city's south, on Friday evening after taking their son to the park when the shocking encounter unfolded.

The family's CCTV footage shows two teenagers in dark pants and hoodies walking down the street as the family pulls up in their white sedan.

When Mr. Kuar tried to get out of the car, the younger of the two teens pulled what appeared to be a gun from his pocket and pointed it directly at the car.

The father got back behind the wheel, closed the door and after a brief standoff, the child and his friend fled down the street on foot.

Ms Kuar said she was upset after the incident.

“I'm so shocked and so is my son because I screamed and that made him scream too,” she told 9News.

“I'm so scared, I don't feel safe right now.”

The family made a triple zero call and also visited their local police station to report the incident and say they no longer felt safe in their own home.
