Germphobes might want to skip this article, because you will be shocked at how many household items are missed – according to expert Deyan Dimitrov.

As CEO of Laundryheap, the dry cleaning app, he knows a thing or two about keeping things clean, especially areas that are overlooked.

In fact, he suggests that there are at least five areas that are regularly overlooked because bacteria build up between cleanings.

Luckily, there’s a way to take control of even the dirtiest items, like the toilet, brushes, shower curtains, toasters, oven mitts, and even wooden spoons!

WOODEN SPOONS

Yes, while they may look more aesthetic than plastic utensils, wooden utensils can harbor bacteria in their cracks and grooves.

Even scrubbing won’t necessarily remove all the germs lurking on your cutting boards and spoons that could contaminate other parts of your kitchen.

For this reason, Deyan recommends soaking wooden utensils in 2 liters of warm water mixed with a teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide.

After soaking them for a few minutes, you can dry them as you normally would. Make sure cutting boards are stacked upright to prevent moisture from building up.

OVEN mitts

While you’re in the kitchen, it can also be a good idea to wash your oven gloves, as crumbs and food scraps provide the perfect breeding ground for bacteria.

Although silicone gloves must be hand washed, most cloth gloves can be added to your weekly laundry load. Don’t forget to check the washing label.

You can also pre-treat them in a solution of warm water, 1 tablespoon of dish soap, and 1 tablespoon of baking soda to remove any remaining bacteria.

Alternatively, you can simply have them cleaned by Laundryheap.

TOASTER

For those who like their homes spotless, you may also want to give the toaster more than just the usual cleaning, especially since the crumb tray is easy to miss.

Start by unplugging your toaster and gently use a clean, dry toothbrush to remove any loose crumbs or larger bits of debris.

You can then remove the toaster drawer, then use dish soap to remove any sticky spots and replace it once it is dry.

SHOWER CURTAINS

Moving to another place in the house, the bathroom next one on the CEO’s to-do list, because shower curtains can be one of the dirtiest places in your home.

Although leaving your shower curtain open can prevent the build-up of mold and mildew, it should still be cleaned once a month to prevent bacteria.

Most are machine washable these days, but you can clean them with a few drops of bleach on a damp, clean sponge.

You don’t even have to dry it, as Deyan recommends letting the shower curtains air dry after a good scrub.

TOILET BRUSH

Finally, you can tackle the dreaded toilet brush with hot soapy water and a little bleach, then let it soak for at least 10 minutes.

While you wait for it to dry, you can balance the brush on the toilet and let excess water drip into the bowl. Don’t forget to clean the container with a disinfectant too!
