Dozens of members of Congress have announced plans to vacate their seats in the House of Representatives, setting a fast pace for congressional departures, with more expected as the 2024 elections approach. Given Republicans’ razor-thin majority in the House of Representatives, the wave of departures has the potential to lead to a significant shakeup next year.
Some lawmakers are leaving after serving in Congress for decades, while several others came more recently. Many in both categories have expressed frustration, saying resentment and dysfunction have gripped the institution in recent years.
Few of the departures announced so far are expected to change the balance of power in the closely divided House, where a large majority of seats are safe for one of the two political parties. But dethroning an incumbent president is a much bigger challenge than winning an open seat, giving both Republicans and Democrats some opportunities to gain seats.
The seat previously held by former Rep. George Santos, Republican of New York, who was ousted in November, is Democrats’ best chance to flip a district in their quest to regain control of the House of Representatives to win back. Republicans see the departure of Representative Elissa Slotkin, Democrat of Michigan, who is leaving her seat to run for Senate, as one of their biggest opportunities to claim a Democratic seat and increase their chances of winning a seat in November maintain a majority.
This table shows the district boundaries that will be used in 2024. Because the lines have been redrawn since the 2020 election, the vote margins shown here may differ from the margins in that district in 2020.
