A couple who met on Blind Date have revealed their relationship is still going strong 35 years later.

Londoners Sue Tatham, 57, and her husband, Alex, 58, the first ever couple to get married after meeting on ITV’s Blind Date, in 1988, revealed in a TikTok video that they’re still as happy as ever – and it’s all thanks to Cilla Zwart.

The video has been posted yesterday by Meet Cutes NYC (@meetcutesnyc), an American TikTok account featuring couples’ love stories, after the creator chanced upon Sue and Alex during a visit to London.

The person behind the camera approaches random couples on the street to ask how they met – and finding Sue and Alex was complete luck.

Londoners Sue Tatham, 57, and her husband, Alex, 58, recently revealed via a chance meeting on TikTok that they’re still as happy as ever – and it’s all thanks to Cilla Black

The man went up to the couple and asked, “Sorry, are you a couple?”

Alex replied “yes” and the TikToker continued by asking “Would you like to tell us the story of how you first met?”

Grinning, he replied, “Yes, we met on television. We met on a TV game show’

“Really, what was the game show?” the man asked in shock.

Alex said: ‘It was called Blind Date’ and Sue agreed with ‘Cilla Black’.

Blind Date ran from 1985 to 2003. The British dating game show featured a singleton asking questions of three potential suitors, named Contestants One, Two and Three, before choosing who he wanted to meet.

In its heyday, the show attracted 18.2 million viewers every Saturday night.

He continued, “You can look us up on YouTube and 17.5 million people watched our wedding.

‘I mean, let’s be honest, I could have chosen from number one and number three, this is number two’ – Sue joked ‘they were really nice too’.

TikToker then added a clip from the couple’s iconic episode, where Cilla Black first introduced them 35 years ago:

‘Here she is, you picked the lovely number 2 and that was Sue from West Midlands, come in Sue.’

The TikToker asked, “35 years later. What do you like most about her?’

Alex looked at his wife and said, “The fact that she is as beautiful today as she was when I first met her.”

When he, then a 23-year-old accountant, chose the shy but cheerful 22-year-old Sue, no one could have imagined that they would build this lifelong relationship.

When asked what her favorite thing about her husband was, Sue said, “He’s so nice and he makes me laugh all the time.”

Finally, the loving couple was asked what advice they would give to a couple who had just met on a blind date.

Sue replied: ‘Go into it with an open heart and just go into it and make the best of it and be positive and kind’, while Alex added: ‘I think the first thing we said is that because we were on a blind date, this will be a spectacular experience.

‘It is visible to the entire British public, the entire British nation. We said that we basically have to make sure we stay friends for the rest of our lives, no matter what happens.’

“If you look up a blind date wedding on YouTube, you’ll see it.”

The TikTok ends with the 1988 clip of Cilla announcing “Ladies and gentlemen, Sue and Alex” as they walk out hand in hand and the rest became history.

The couple have two children, Emily, 27, and Charlie, 25, with whom they celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2021.

Commenters were captivated by their love story and couldn’t believe the TikToker would likely find them on the street.

One user wrote ‘Wow!!!! What are the chances of meeting them?!?!?’

Another said: ‘I’m sure it was the first time Cilla Black brought herself a new hat for the first blind date wedding. Old enough to remember it too’.

Someone else wrote ‘Oh my God, a couple from Blind Date?! It’s so nice to know they’re still together!’

Other viewers noticed little details in the video that proved how in love Alex and Sue are with each other.

One said: ‘Please, the way he looks at her when she’s talking,’ while another added ‘the fact he’s looking for her hand all the time.’

Someone else said: ‘I’m so old I remember this and have looked them up every now and then! “Amazing that you happened to come across them.”

Another replied: ‘Omg this is the cutest thing ever! What a story to tell your children and grandchildren.’

The couple came from very different backgrounds, with Alex educated at Eton and then Durham University.

His family regularly featured in society bible Tatler, with one report on Alex’s 21st birthday party at their home in Fulham, west London.

A tough middle-class woman, Sue is the product of an education in the West Midlands and left school at 18 to work in a DHSS office.

They courted for three years – spending every weekend together in London or Walsall – before marrying at Sue’s parish church in Pelsall on October 19, 1991.

The British public loved their story so much that 5,000 strangers turned up outside the church to cheer them on, while the televised Blind Date wedding special was the second most watched program in 1991, with 17 million viewers.

In 2021, Sue told FEMAIL: ‘We have each other’s backs.

‘No matter what life has to offer us, we are there for each other. When we are at a party, Alex will always keep an eye on me and make sure I am okay.

“We may come from different backgrounds, but we have similar values. We both hate arguing and make it a priority to have a friendly atmosphere. Family comes first, always.

‘We mainly want to have fun. We love trying new experiences together. And believe it or not, I still get goosebumps when Alex enters a room.

“Life is never boring with Alex around,” she added fondly, “I have loved every minute of the last thirty years with him.

“I don’t think anyone would seriously recommend going on a dating show to find a husband, but it certainly worked out for us.”

‘Without Blind Date we would simply never have met. We are very lucky.’
