Shocking footage of a dangerous 4WD stunt on a popular beach has sparked outrage among locals.

Derrin Cook filmed the Silver Toyota Landcruiser driving along Rainbow Beach, Queensland, with five people hanging from the outside of the vehicle as another 4WD drove alongside.

The footage shows three people standing on either side of the car holding on. There were two people on the roof, one holding a bottle.

Mr Cook, who confronted the group, has since shared the video online.

“I was hanging out on the beach with my son, when I saw this happen, they did it back and forth a few times,” the old man told the Sunshine Coast daily.

“I went to them and said, 'Look, don't do this.'

“They just laughed at me and carried on, so that was it.”

Cook suspected those involved were tourists filming the stunt for social media.

'I said to the driver, 'I know the girls are hot and they look good on Instagram and all that… but it's not worth doing it for Instagram, it's all good until someone gets squashed .'

Queensland Police confirmed they were aware of the incident and have launched an investigation.

No charges have been laid at this stage.

Located between K'gari (formerly Fraser Island) and Cooloola National Park, Rainbow Beach is a popular 4WD enthusiast.

As a long-term resident of the Cooloola Coast, Mr Cook said there has been an increase in dangerous behavior recently.

The longtime local resident said that after living there for more than 30 years, he didn't want it to be ruined by people doing the wrong thing.

“We've all been young and done stupid things, but don't do it in a place where a lot of other people could get hurt,” he said.

He's also concerned about stunts like the one he filmed, which will no longer allow off-road access to the beach.

The latest incident comes after the death of a French student who was killed after the 4WD he was in rolled near the Teewah Beach campsite last November.
