Shakespeare’s most extraordinary psychological drama is an enchanting story about love and murder, the renewing power of nature and the internal struggle of a damaged man trying to control his destiny.

The tragedy tells the story of soldier Macbeth who gruesomely becomes king of Scotland thanks to the promises of witches and the insistence of his wife.

Donmar’s version of the famous play uses binaural sound technology to put the audience inside the heads of the Macbeths and encourage them to wonder, are humans ever really responsible for our actions?

Although David has a healthy stage career, he is playing Hamlet for the first time. However, he did play the character in a two-part BBC Radio 4 broadcast in 2022.

It will be his first Shakespearean role on stage since the Scot played Richard II in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production between 2013 and 2016.

He and Cush are directed by Donmar Associate Director Max Webster, who also directed Henry V.

Hamlet will be the final production of the 30th anniversary season for Donmar, which started life as a banana ripening warehouse.

Tickets for David Tennant and Cush Jumbo’s Macbeth, which opens on December 8 and closes on February 10, are sold out.

In November, David thrilled fans when he appeared in Doctor Who’s highly anticipated 60th anniversary celebration, reprising his role as Time Lord alongside Catherine Tate, who played his companion Donna Noble.

The pair’s return to the BBC show, in the first of three specials, 15 years after they last traveled together in the TARDIS, has been praised by fans.

It was a reunion that had raised questions, as Donna’s memory of The Doctor was wiped away in an attempt to save her life during their final adventure in 2008.

However, showrunner Russell T Davies created an unlikely loophole that restored Donna’s memories, allowing her to see The Doctor again after they dealt with a new alien threat.
