After passengers generate their boarding passes and baggage tags at the Self Check-In kiosk, they must tag their checked baggage.

New Delhi: Airline passengers will have less time to wait at the airport as Delhi airport operator DIAL said on Monday it has introduced the Self Baggage Drop (SBD) facility at Terminal 3 to reduce waiting time for passengers.

Here’s how it will help airline passengers

The Self Baggage Drop (SBD) facility at the airport will streamline the baggage drop process, reduce passenger waiting time by approximately 15-20 minutes and further enhance the overall airport experience.

In addition, the facility can serve up to three passengers per minute, according to Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL).

Domestic passengers can currently use the facility and it will be made available to international passengers following mandatory approvals.

To operate the facility, a total of 14 SBD machines have been installed, including 12 automated and two hybrids.

“Currently, passengers traveling with IndiGo can use the facility, but five other airlines, including Air India, Vistara, Air France, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and British Airways, are likely to allow the use of self-baggage drop for their passengers in the near future,” DIAL said in a statement.

Here’s how to use the facility

According to the airport, airline passengers can use the SBD facility through a two-step process. After passengers generate their boarding passes and baggage tags at the Self Check-In kiosk, they must tag their checked baggage.

At the SBD facility, they must scan their boarding pass, certify that their baggage is free of prohibited/dangerous items, and load their baggage onto the designated belt. Upon completion of the process, the baggage will be automatically taken to the sorting area and then to the aircraft.

If the weight of the checked baggage exceeds the limit allowed by the airline, the checked baggage will not be accepted by the machine. There will be airline personnel near the facility to assist passengers.

“DIAL has worked relentlessly to maximize the passenger experience at Delhi Airport through various digitization and automation initiatives. The Self-Baggage Drop facility aims to make the passengers self-reliant while significantly reducing the time taken for baggage handling…,” said Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of DIAL.

DIAL, a consortium led by GMR Airport Infrastructure Ltd, operates the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport in the national capital.
