THE prices of games and consoles are constantly rising, making an expensive hobby even more expensive.

With the number of games coming out, gamers have had to make some sacrifices and choose more carefully which games to purchase.

One part of this that has made the choices even tougher is a worrying trend happening in gaming.

Games are locking more content than ever behind additional purchases at not insignificant prices.

What people are paying attention to is the rise of Deluxe Editions, where the main benefit is that you can play the game before the official release date.

Players will have to pay up to £20/$20 on top of the already high price tag of £70/$70 just to play the game when it becomes available.

People who purchase these Deluxe Editions can play games up to a week early, making them an essential addition for some players.

The hype around a game is at its highest when it's released, and if you purchase it later you run the risk of seeing spoilers on social media.

It seems wild that a game wouldn't be available to those who buy it the day it first becomes available, but this is almost the norm now.

However, the release date isn't the only thing developers are now putting behind a paywall.

A recent example is the release of Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, which has received critical acclaim across the board.

While the game will release on the same date for everyone, extra lessons for your team and even New Game+ are both hidden behind additional costs.

Sonic Origins is one of the worst examples of this, as something as essential as the main menu and cutscenes are behind the Deluxe Editions.

As long as people continue to buy these more expensive premium editions, developers will continue to release games with content that should be behind a paywall by default.

It's a worrying trend that's happening, and while people fear the £100/$100 game is coming, I'd say it's already here.
