Detective Sarah Everard reveals shocking moment she discovered killer Wayne Couzens was a Met officer
THE officer who led the Sarah Everard murder investigation has spoken about the moment she discovered killer Wayne Couzens was a US police officer.
Katherine Goodwin says someone from her team came into her office to reveal it the suspect was one of their own.
The detective chief said a police computer identified him as suspected of being a speedster – before triggering an alert that he was a weapons officer.
She spoke to the camera for one new BBC documentary about the murder of 33-year-old Sarah by perverted off-duty officer Couzens, 51, in March 2021.
He was identified on CCTV footage of him next to a car as he snatched Sarah from the street in Clapham, south London.
Mrs Goodwin said: “At that time, Wayne Couzens was a name that meant nothing to any of us.”

She said discovering he was charged with indecent exposure “changed everything”.
She added: “Suddenly it was clear that Sarah had gotten into the car of an alleged sex offender.”
Then she discovered his job as a weapons agent at the Met and told her boss. Ms Goodwin said: “I can still remember the shock of just having to sit on the floor of the office and say to her, ‘You’re not going to believe this, that he’s a police officer’.”
Couzens was given a life sentence for Sarah’s rape and murder.
