Dana Carvey said Thursday that his son, comedian Dex Carvey, died at the age of 32 from an accidental drug overdose.
“Last night we experienced a terrible tragedy,” the SNL alum, 68, and his wife Paula said in a statement on Instagram. “Our beloved son, Dex, died of an accidental drug overdose. He was 32 years old.
‘Dex has put a lot into those 32 years. He was extremely talented in so many things – music, art, filmmaking, comedy – and followed them all passionately.”
The couple continued: Dex “most of all, he loved his family, his friends and his girlfriend Kaylee.
‘Dex was a beautiful person. His handmade birthday cards are a treasure. We will miss him forever.’

The statement concluded: “To anyone struggling with addiction or who loves someone struggling with addiction, you are in our hearts and prayers.”
Dex died Wednesday night at his Los Angeles home when his girlfriend called 911 around 10 p.m., police sources said TMZ Thursday.
Dex “was locked in a bathroom,” police told the newspaper, and “was unresponsive when discovered.”
Police sources told TMZ that paramedics attempted to revive Dex, who was then “pronounced dead at the scene.”
An autopsy was performed on Dex, but authorities have not determined the cause of death as they await the results of toxicology tests.
Dexter had a career background in entertainment, as he was a comedian who opened for his father during the filming of his Netflix special Straight White Male in 2016.
Dana is best known for his work on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, as he was a cast member of the series from 1986 to 1993.
He received a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program in his final year on the series, and has hosted the show several times in the years since his departure.
Dana played the role of Garth Algar in the popular 1992 SNL spin-off film Wayne’s World alongside Mike Myers, and its 1993 sequel.
