Die Hard’s Bruce Willis beats Indiana Jones to the top spot in the battle for best movie action heroes

When it comes to the battle of the movie action men, it’s Bruce Willis who still comes out on top.

John McTiernan’s classic Die Hard, in which Willis plays Detective John McClane, has been named the greatest action movie of all time.

The 1988 film topped the poll of 2,000 people, with 18 percent of the vote — narrowly beating Steven Spielberg’s first film in the Indiana Jones franchise, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, into second place with 15 percent.

Top Gun came in third with 13 percent, while Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Gladiator rounded out the top five with 12 percent and 11 percent, respectively.

Other films in the top ten include The Matrix, The Bourne Identity, John Wick, The Good, The Bad And The Ugly, and Dirty Harry.

Jon Dixon, from Showcase Cinemas, who conducted the survey, said: ‘Action films are a staple of the big screen, which is reflected in our survey, with 62 per cent of respondents saying they are the most exciting genre to watch at the cinema.’

Last year, 68-year-old Willis retired from acting after being diagnosed with aphasia, a condition that can hinder the ability to speak.

In February, his family said he suffered from frontotemporal dementia, which causes behavioral and language problems.

But for Sunderland die hard superfan Terry Black, Willis is still his “hero” and estimates he’s seen the film around 150 times.

He said: ‘I first saw Die Hard when it first came out and I think I’ve watched it four or five times a year since then.

“There isn’t a word I don’t know in the movie and for me there hasn’t been a better action movie ever made.”
