New Delhi: The All India Motor Transport Association (AIMTC) on Tuesday decided to end the nationwide protests by truck drivers against the new hit-and-run law after a meeting with Union Home Minister Ajay Bhalla. The government assured the members of the transport body that the new laws have not yet been implemented and will be implemented only after consultations with AIMTC.

The office-bearers of AIMTC, an umbrella organization of truck drivers across the country, wanted the government to withdraw the provisions, claiming they would be “burdensome” and cause hardship to drivers. AIMTC president Amritlal Madan told reporters, “The government should withdraw the provisions regarding hit-and-run cases in the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.”

He further said that the truckers’ association will decide the future course of action after a meeting with the Union Home Minister in the evening. Madan also said that 60 to 70 percent of all trucks are currently off the road due to the ongoing strike. AIMTC organizing committee chairman Bal Mankit Singh urged the government not to drag out the issue for so long as happened in the case of the Farmers Bill.

He regretted that the government had not consulted with stakeholders.

According to official sources, the government is paying attention to the matter and will make efforts to resolve the issue amicably.

According to the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), which replaced India’s colonial-era Penal Code, drivers who cause a serious traffic accident through careless driving and run away without informing the police or a government official can face a maximum sentence of ten years. or a fine of Rs 7 lakh.
