Under the new 2021 IT rules, major digital and social media platforms, with more than 5 million users, must publish monthly compliance reports.
New Delhi: Twitter, led by Elon Musk, banned a record 11,32,228 accounts in India between April 26 and May 25, mainly for promoting child sexual exploitation and non-consensual nudity. The microblogging platform, which went through a churning under Musk, who has now appointed a new Twitter CEO in Linda Yaccarino, also removed 1,843 accounts for promoting terrorism on his platform in the country.
In total, Twitter banned 11,34,071 accounts in India during the reporting period. Twitter said in its monthly report in line with the new IT rules, 2021, that it has received 518 complaints from users in India through its complaint recovery mechanisms in the same time frame.
In addition, Twitter processed 90 complaints that amounted to attractive account suspensions. “We reversed 25 of these account suspensions after reviewing the specifics of the situation. The remaining reported accounts remain suspended,” the company said.
“We received 29 requests related to general questions about Twitter accounts during this reporting period,” it added.
The most complaints from India were abuse/harassment (264), followed by hateful behavior (84), sensitive adult content (67) and defamation (51). Under the new 2021 IT rules, major digital and social media platforms, with more than 5 million users, must publish monthly compliance reports.
Meanwhile, under Musk, Twitter recently approved a whopping 83 percent of government requests to restrict or block content worldwide, including in India and Turkey, the media reported.
When asked last month about former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s wild allegation that the Indian government had threatened to ban Twitter if it did not block certain accounts, Musk told reporters after his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US that a company “I have no choice but to obey the local authorities”.
“If we don’t obey local government laws, we’ll be shut down. So the best thing we can do is get really close to the law in a given country,” he said.
“It’s impossible for us to do more than that (or) we’re blocked and our people arrested,” Musk added.
