‘I knew it was a scam’ Fortnite players are relieved their data is safe
FORTNITE players and Epic Games Store users recently received threats that their personal and payment information had been compromised.
A group posted on the dark web, reportedly asking for $15,000 (12,000 euros) in exchange for a data package that they claimed contained personal data and source code stolen from Epic Games.
Epic Games is the developer of Fortnite, one of the world’s most popular games, and has an online store that gives away free games every week.
This means it has recorded a lot of player payment details, so a number of people were concerned about the claims.
In response to the claims, Epic Games wrote: “[The group] has not contacted Epic or provided any evidence of the veracity of these allegations.”
Epic Games investigated the matter but could not find any evidence that a data breach had even occurred.
March 4 was the deadline after which the group said it would release all of Epic Games’ data.
Instead, the group released a statement admitting that they had never stolen any data and that the entire operation was a scam.
As reported by Cyber dailythe group would claim to steal large amounts of data and sell it to the highest bidder.
Although no data was stolen to sell, people seeking to possess the illegal data are said to have paid large sums of money to the group.
They state that the group did not want any shame for the scam, but was honest to “illustrate the process of their scam.”
Once again, no evidence has been provided that the group managed to find buyers for their fake data at all, so this ‘confession’ could also be a lie.
The most important information to emerge from this ‘confession’ is that Epic Games has never been hacked and that player data is safe.
