A tourist visiting Canada who was on the scene told DailyMail.com that she saw plumes of smoke rising into the sky and was told they would not be able to cross.

She was trying to cross into the US for a walk from Canada when they were turned around.

She said: ‘It must have happened just as we planned for it. Moments before, the guard had said: as long as we have passports, it’s fine.

“Then we were told not to go there and to try again in a few hours.”
