Guwahati, Assam: In a milestone towards gender equality and women empowerment, Gauhati University has introduced menstrual leave for students enrolled in the varsity and its various affiliated colleges.

According to an official notification issued by Gauhati University, female students of the varsity and its affiliated colleges can avail menstrual leave if they wish.

Options for using menstrual leave:

According to the notification, the Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University has allowed a relaxation of 2 percent for female students as ‘menstrual leave’ in the minimum class attendance for all departments of Gauhati University and for its affiliated colleges.

With the leave provisions being made available to female students, a minimum class attendance of 73 percent will be required to appear in the semester examinations, the varsity notification said.

The order in this regard will come into effect immediately, it said.

The development comes after guidelines issued by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Women and Child Development earlier this year.

Menstrual health is an integral part of a person’s health and well-being and determines quality of life, including issues such as mobility, employment, access to education, dignity and freedom.

This policy of Gauhati University will help in recognizing and addressing the unique challenges faced by female students during their menstrual cycle.

Established in 1948, Gauhati University is one of the premier institutions of higher learning in the Northeast India region and one of the most sought after postgraduate institutions.
