According to police, the unusual road accident took place on Sunday evening when the victims were waiting for a bus on the roadside on Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida.

The trio was mowed down by a speeding car after the driver of the vehicle reportedly fell asleep while driving, police said, adding that the errant driver was taken into custody and booked.

“On Sunday evening, three men were waiting along the YXP when the incident took place in the Jewish Quarter. A Delhi-registered Maruti Swift car hit the trio who were admitted to a nearby private hospital where one succumbed to injuries and others underwent treatment,” an official said, adding that the deceased has been identified as 37-year-old Suresh Singh. a resident of Jahangirpur in Jewar.

The accused driver, Raja Kumar, who works at a bank in Delhi, was arrested and booked under Section 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code, police said.

“During interrogation, Kumar claimed that he fell asleep while driving on the Yamuna Expressway, which caused the accident,” they said.

On Monday, the accused driver was granted bail by a local court, an official said.

Gautam Buddh Nagar, which includes the cities of Noida and Greater Noida, is notorious for road accidents. In 2023, there were 1,176 traffic accidents in the area, killing 470 people and injuring 858 people.

According to official data, the district recorded 437 deaths and injuries among 856 people in 2022.

Driver dies of heart attack in Rajasthan and mows down crowd

In a similar incident last month, a car rammed into a religious procession in Nagaur, Rajasthan, after the driver of the vehicle suffered a fatal heart attack and apparently died while driving. Five people were injured in the accident.

According to police, the deceased, identified as 60-year-old Ishaq Mohammad, went to Degana hospital for a medical check-up on one of his relatives when he suffered a heart attack and lost consciousness, causing the car to break down. plowed into the crowd at breakneck speed while pressing the accelerator in an unconscious state.

They said the SUV was slowly moving behind the procession being taken out by the Jangid community on the occasion of Vishwakarma Jayanti.

The incident was captured on a CCTV camera installed in the area and the footage went viral on social media platforms.
