It comes after hundreds of banking and building societies closed their doors for good last year.

One person said: “This really is the death of the big bank.”

Another called the closure of the Barclays Haverford West branch in January a “devastating blow”.

A third exclaimed: “More closures?!!!”

What should you do if your local bank branch closes?

It can be a frightening thought for those who still rely on their local bank branch to hear that it is closing.

Elderly people who do not have access to the internet and people living in rural areas may face a major problem.

However, if your local branch will close soon, or has recently closed, there are some options open to you.

It is possible to perform most basic banking tasks in your home Post office.

However, they cannot help you when it comes to applying for a loan or opening a new bank account. You must still contact your bank directly for these services.

If you are not sure where the nearest post office is, you can use the location tool on the website.

Just enter your zip code and you will know where the nearest one is near you.

Since the reduction in the number of shops on the high street, many banks have started to offer a mobile banking service.

Here a bus comes to your location offering services that you previously got at your local branch.

Check with your banking provider to see if they offer this service and what day of the week it is available.

Other banks also use buildings such as village halls or libraries, so it’s worth checking with them to see what they have to offer.

Meanwhile, more closures are also planned for later in the year; we have the full list of bank branches that will close in 2024.
