New Delhi: The Union Home Ministry on Tuesday sought a detailed report from the Mamata Banerjee-led Bengal government on the attacks on the Enforcement Directorate (ED) team in the state on January 5. The Central Agency team was attacked in West Bengal’s Sandesh Khali after raiding certain locations in North 24 Parganas district in connection with a ration distribution scam case.
The incident took place after the ED team reached the residence of Trinamool leader Sheikh Shahjahan. He was subsequently arrested in connection with the assault.

Over 200 locals, all believed to be supporters of the TMC leader, surrounded the ED officials as well as the armed paramilitary forces accompanying the team when they tried to raid his residence in connection with the ration fraud investigation .

The Central Bureau team was attacked in West Bengal’s Sandeskh Khali after raiding certain locations in North 24 Parganas district in connection with a ration distribution scam case.
More than 200 locals, all believed to be supporters of the TMC leader, surrounded the ED officials as well as the armed paramilitary forces accompanying the team.
Locals surrounded the officials and demonstrated before attacking them and forcing them to leave the area.

The TMC leader did not open despite several calls from the ED officials.
One of the officers suffered a head injury and had to be taken to hospital.

The ED officers conducted raids at 15 places in the state during the day, including Sheikh Shahjahan’s residence. Sheikh Shahjahan is believed to be a close aide of Jyotipriyo Mallick, who was arrested in connection with the multi-crore ration distribution scam.

Regarding three properties of Sahajahan Sheikh Convenor of TMC Sandesh Khali, North 24 Parganas, the ED said that as soon as the search team arrived at two properties, regarding one property i.e. Sahajahan Sheikh’s residence, the door was locked . inside and he refused to open the door.

“While officers with the help of CRPF personnel tried to open the door even by trying to contact the concerned person. His cellphone location at that time indicated that he was in this house,” ED said.

“After that, the ED team was surprised that within half an hour the crowd of around 800 to 1000 persons marched towards them carrying weapons in their hands like lathes, stones, bricks etc. and greeted the ED officials and CRPF personnel,” , the ED said in a statement.
