But shocking images from the scene show a canister wedged against the wall at the foot of the apartment block.

Motorists are advised to stay away from the affected area.

Details about the cause of the crash are still unclear.

Police say five people were injured and the investigation is ongoing.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Five people have been taken to hospital for treatment and inquiries are ongoing.

A number of road closures are in force including Calside Avenue, Polsons Crescent, Craw Road and Alexandra Gate. Motorists are asked to avoid the area.

A spokesperson for McGill’s Buses said: “This is a live incident and McGill staff are present to establish the details of the crash. We are unable to comment further at this stage.”

A resident who was at the scene at the time of the bus crash said the passengers were in shock.

David Bannerman told it BBC Scotland News: “We heard the crash, looked out the window and saw that the barriers had been hit, so we went downstairs to see what we could do to help.

“The people on the bus were all a bit dazed and confused, so we just tried to calm them down. I think it will all work out in the end.

“We couldn’t get people off the bus because the doors were stuck, but we made sure they all stayed seated until emergency services arrived.”
