TEN sailors required medical treatment after a fire on the Royal Navy’s “cursed aircraft carrier” HMS Queen Elizabeth.
Medics treated the injured after the fire destroyed the mess decks and crew sleeping quarters, destroying 100 beds.
It is understood the fire started shortly after 11pm last Friday in an air conditioning unit on the trouble-plagued aircraft carrier.
Crews battled the flames with extinguishers before sealing off compartments to stop the spread of the fire.
The incident was not declared over until 4:30 am.
A source said: “The order came to clear the lower decks after the fire broke out and everyone gathered in the hangar for a headcount.
“Some of the sailors were drunk because they were off duty and it was Friday evening.
“Those who were fit enough were given jobs to help with the fire.
“Sprinkler systems finally put it out.”
The £3.2 billion ship was moored in Glenmallan Scotland to unload ammunition when the fire started.
A Navy spokesperson said: “An isolated fire was quickly brought under control.
This will not affect HMS Queen Elizabethits obligations.”
It is the latest setback for the 65,000-ton aircraft carrier, which withdrew NATO wargames last month with a defective propeller shaft.
In 2017 and 2019 she suffered from leaks. In 2021, one of its jets crashed into the sea.
