Iman Shumpert responded to estranged wife Teyana Taylorclaims she felt threatened in their relationship before filing for divorce.
Shumpert, 33, claimed in his response that Taylor, 32, cannot prove he made her feel unsafe, according to court documents obtained by TMZ on Thursday, December 7.
Taylor reportedly cited “cruel treatment” as the reason for the dissolution of the couple’s seven-year marriage. (Divorce law defines cruel and inhuman treatment as physical, verbal, sexual or emotional cruelty committed by the defendant against the plaintiff and endangering his physical or mental well-being.)
Shumpert denied the claims, noting that the only reason for their divorce was an “irreparable broken bond.” He requested that the allegations be removed from Taylor’s petition and also noted that he is not irresponsible to the couple’s two daughters: Junie, 8, and Rue, 3.
Taylor announced in September that she and Shumpert had been separated for “a while” but remained committed to co-parenting their children.
“To be clear, ‘infidelity’ is not one of the reasons for our departure,” she wrote on September 17 via Instagram. “We are still the best of friends, great business partners and make a great team when it comes to co-parenting our two beautiful children.”
Taylor continued at the time: “The most important thing is that we are FAMILY and in 10 years together, 7 years married, we have never played with or talked about that. We just keep you guys out of the group chat lol which is why we successfully and peacefully parted ways without all the outside noise.
Last month, news broke that Taylor had actually filed for divorce in January. She claimed in her filing that Shumpert is a jealous narcissist and that he often felt insecure because he was not good enough. (We weekly contacted Shumpert for comment at the time.)
Taylor later requested privacy for the sake of the couple’s daughters as their divorce proceedings continued.
“I mind my business, don’t bother anyone and y’all know I’ve never played about my kids, family and our privacy,” she wrote in an Instagram Story statement on November 25. “Protecting my family is something I have ALWAYS done and for my children [and] I will continue to do that. If you all love playing nieces Junie and Rue, as you all have shown, please allow myself and my family some privacy to resolve this matter in peace. Love you all.”
