Why losing the toss is a blessing for Rohit Sharma and co in the 2023 ICC World Cup final?

Ahmedabad: India may have lost the toss just before the start of the match against Australia in the ICC World Cup 2023 Final at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, but this loss means well for Rohit Sharma and co due to a past record in the 50-over top conflict.

Historically, the Men in Blue won the world title whenever they lost the toss in the final.

In the 1983 and 2011 finals, India lost the toss and won the summit clash. It wasn’t until 2003, when they played the Australians, that they won the toss and finished on the losing side.

So the Indians can count on luck for this loss.

“I would have hit first. Looks like a good pitch, big play, puts runs on the board. It will be great. Every time we play here the crowd comes out in large numbers. This is the biggest event in the cricket calendar. We have to stay calm,” Rohit said at the toss.

Talking about the match, Virat Kohli (54) and KL Rahul (66) reached the fifties before Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins wreaked havoc as Australia restricted India to 240 all out.

Rohit Sharma gave India a blazing start, but Australia made a comeback with regular goals to put the home side behind. Kohli, who became the first Indian to score more than 50 runs in both the semi-final and final of the same World Cup, and Rahul revived India’s innings with cautious knocks but Australia continued to take wickets at regular intervals.
