Chioma Nnadi has taken over as the new head of British Vogue and will take her place Edward Ennfulthe outgoing editor-in-chief.

New York-based Londoner Chioma, 44, who is currently editor of the US edition's website, will move to London and hold the title of 'head of Editorial content' of the British magazine.

Chioma, who was previously praised by Anna Wintour due to her 'impeccable' reputation, will be the first black woman to edit the fashion magazine.

Described by colleagues as modest, nuanced and even 'shy', the Londoner manages to be both a style icon and a recognizable figure.

Here, FEMAIL delves into the glamorous life of the new head of British Vogue…

Chioma is known as the 'nicest person at Vogue', before the announcement an insider told The Times: 'Chioma is a great choice. She is serious and smart and really knows her stuff. She doesn't let herself be fooled.'

“Chioma is not the terrifying fashion editor of old,” said another Condé Nast insider.

'She's quite shy one-on-one and very calm. She's one of those people who pauses before answering a question.”

While one veteran fashion PR said: 'Off the record, [Nnadi] is the nicest person I have ever dealt with at Vogue.”

Her mixed and multicultural background makes her stand out in the fashion world, she says.

During her speech at the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2018, she claimed, “I look around too often. . . fashion week and I'm one of the few black and brown faces. Black creatives are underrepresented at every level. . . Racism is a systemic problem'.

Nnadi grew up in central London, born to her mother, a Swiss-German nurse, and her Nigerian father who came to Britain to study in the 1960s.

She started her career on the features desk of the Evening Standard magazine.

She moved to New York in 2010 to write for independent style magazine Trace before covering fashion and music links for Fader.

Nnadi, who is rumored to be single, lives with a housemate in New York but would like to move to London to be closer to her family.

Chioma credits her father for sparking her passion for fashion – and says she still wears his vintage clothes today.

She recently wrote, “As a child, all I remember is my father wearing a suit, even though he wore it without a tie when he wasn't working his government job on the weekends.

“His suits and shirts were still in the largest closet of our modest three-bedroom apartment, even though there were eight or nine of us living there: cousins, aunts, uncles and other extended family members from Nigeria.

'I never threw anything away, my father kept his clothes for years even when they were worn out, something I know still drives my mother up the wall.

'However, it was a blessing for me as a teenager to discover this Narnia of vintage menswear in my own home: distressed leather jackets and frayed indigo-dyed dashikis that I still wear to this day.

'While my mother's fantastic 60s mini dresses were always too short in the legs and/or too big in the bust, his slim-cut menswear fit me like a glove.'

She started as a fashion news writer in 2010, worked her way up and was appointed Fashion News Director in 2014.

She was behind some of Vogue's biggest cover stories, including Rihanna, Cara Delevingne and Erykah Badu.

Nnadi also co-hosts Vogue's popular podcast, The Run-Through. She has also spearheaded online coverage of major events, including the Met Gala.

On September 18, 2023, it was announced that Nandi had been appointed the new head of editorial content to lead British Vogue.

The decision comes after months of speculation over who would replace 51-year-old Edward Enninful, who made history when he was named Vogue's first black editor-in-chief in 2017.

Enninful described Nnadi in a statement as a “brilliant and unique talent with real vision.”

Anna Wintour said in a statement: 'Chioma is well-liked among her colleagues at Vogue, and is an editor and writer with an impeccable reputation – both here and in the fashion industry as a whole.

“I can't think of a more worthy person to follow in his footsteps than Chioma, who has proven adept at speaking to our digital audiences and has found ways to leverage Vogue's reach, authority and influence across all our platforms expand.

“She is passionate about fashion, music and culture, and I couldn't be happier that she will lead our editorial and creative teams in London.”

Wintour described Nnadi as a “beloved” colleague who will focus on “music and culture” in addition to fashion, adding that the new editor is “taking Vogue into the future.”

Nnadi said: “I am extremely excited and honored to have been appointed as British Vogue's head of editorial content. As someone born and raised in London, the energy of the city – its groundbreaking style and creative scene – has shaped the way I see the world.

'Now more than ever it feels like a moment to look beyond borders while celebrating the breadth of what it means to be British. I look forward to engaging a loyal and inspired digital community energized by our access, viewpoints and stories.”
