And Munguia only had one man on his mind after the demolition job in Phoenix.

He said: “It would be a great fight between the Mexicans. And if Canelo gives us the opportunity, it will be an honor to be in the same ring as him.”

Ryder, who was defeated by Canelo in twelve rounds last May, dropped out for the first time in the second round after a right hand.

In the fourth, he was knocked into the ropes and quickly put down again, this time with a short countering left hand.

Ryder, 35, fought back, but in round nine he landed on the floor twice and was left standing.

It leaves the brave Briton on the brink of retirement while Munguia, 27, scored one of the most impressive wins of his career.

He said: “I've been preparing for this. I worked hard, I know they don't trust me and here are the results.

“I'm ready, here at 168. Ryder is a great fighter, I've learned a lot and I'm moving forward.

“He is a very strong fighter. I had to be very careful. He has a very hard head, but now I feel very happy.”

Promoter Oscar de la Hoya added: “Jaime did what Canelo couldn't do: he took out the Gorilla.

“I am very proud because Munguia has evolved.”
