Kareem Abdul-Jabbar ‘accidentally’ falls, causing a broken hip

Kareem Abdul Jabbar was rushed to a Los Angeles hospital after breaking his hip in a fall that occurred on Friday, December 15.

“Last night, while attending a concert, Kareem accidentally fell and broke his hip,” said Abdul-Jabber’s longtime business manager. Deborah Moralesshared in a statement via X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, December 16. “He is having surgery today.”

Morales went on to say that everyone was “very grateful for all the support for Kareem,” especially thanking the Los Angeles Fire Department “who assisted Kareem on the scene.” She went on to praise the “great medical team and doctors at UCLA Hospital who are now taking great care of Kareem.”

TMZ was the first to report the news of the NBA legend’s fall.

Abdul-Jabbar, 76, was drafted into the NBA as a center for the Milwaukee Bucks, where he played from 1969 to 1975. From there, the basketball star moved to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he played from 1975 to 1989. 20-year playing career.

After his tenure as an NBA star, Abdul-Jabbar is still a notable name in the basketball world. Not to mention that he has been outspoken about several social issues, including those involving his own health.

Earlier this month, Abdul-Jabbar said he had been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation after years of having “an irregular heartbeat and shortness of breath and no energy.”

“I thought it was a temporary problem,” he said People in February, noting that when he started feeling sick during a baseball game, he took things more seriously. “I was an athlete and was in good shape, so I felt like it wouldn’t bother me for a while. But I was completely wrong.”

Amid the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Abdul-Jabbar also wrote a WebMD essay that discussed the importance of health care for black Americans and revealed that he had battled prostate cancer and leukemia in recent years in addition to heart bypass surgery.

“I have been fortunate that my celebrity has given me enough financial security to receive excellent medical care. No one wants an NBA legend to die on their watch. “Imagine the reviews on Yelp,” he wrote in part at the time. “But while I am grateful for my benefits, I am acutely aware that many others in the Black community do not have the same options and that it is my responsibility to join those fighting to change that. Because black lives are in danger. Serious risk.”

Abdul-Jabbar continued, writing, “The more insidious and damaging threat to the health, lives, and economic well-being of Black Americans is a health care system that ignores the fact that even though they are most in need of medical services, they actually get the lowest level.”
