Kate Middleton has been wrongly accused of rejecting Meghan Markle during their very first meeting – and another translation problem is to blame

The publication of Omid Scobie’s Endgame has had major repercussions after two ‘royal racists’ were named in the Dutch version of the book – and now it appears another translation issue in Prince Harry’s memoir months earlier had wrongly labeled the Princess of Wales being able to paint in poor light.

Following the publication of Prince Harry’s memoir Spare, it was widely reported that Kate chose to stay outside in the Kensington Palace garden with her children, rather than meet Meghan on the first day she dropped by to be introduced to William.

However, Spare was accidentally released in Spain days before its official release date in January 2023, and Harry’s words, translated from Spanish to English, were widely misinterpreted as Kate being nearby in the garden, rather than completely gone from home.

According to Prince Harry’s own words in the English version, he asked William where Kate was, to which his brother replied: “Out with the kids.”

The Spanish version of the book states that when Harry asked where Kate was, William replied, “Fuera, con los ninos.”

This directly translates as: ‘Out with the kids’, not ‘outside’, but the myth has persisted.

It immediately follows another translation drama when two so-called ‘royal racists’ are mentioned in the Dutch version of Omid Scobie’s book Endgame.

The translators insist that Kate and King Charles’ names were in the version of the book they received. Omid denies this and Buckingham Palace is said to be considering legal action.

In Spare, released in January this year, the Duke of Sussex recalled the first time he brought Meghan to William and Kate’s house so they could meet.

The book describes the scene in which Meghan gives William a big hug, something that surprised ‘Willy’ because, according to Harry, he is not much of a hugger.

The pair exchanged pleasantries and Harry then asked William where Kate was, to which his brother replied: ‘Out with the kids’.

It didn’t seem to make much difference that Harry replied, “Ah, too bad.” The next time.’

Although he remembers Meghan’s first meetings with the Queen, Charles, Camilla and William in the book, he never actually mentions what happened when she was first introduced to Kate.

But later in Harry’s memoir, he describes an evening between the four when Meghan cooked dinner and everyone seemed to get along.

The conversation was conversational and the topics ranged from Wimbledon – both women shared a passion for tennis – to the popular American legal drama Suits, in which Meghan played the lead role for seven seasons.

Prince Harry spoke in his memoir about the early days of Meghan's relationship with Kate and William, saying everyone got along well.

Prince Harry spoke in his memoir about the early days of Meghan’s relationship with Kate and William, saying everyone got along well.

‘[Prince William] seemed to like Meg, despite his often expressed concerns. Kate seemed to like her too,” the book said.

The only downside, Harry mused, was how differently the two women were dressed, with Meghan in “torn jeans, barefoot,” while Kate was “dressed to the nines.”

But again, the book didn’t portray the contrasting clothing as a sticking point, with Harry recalling that it was “not a problem, I thought.”

Although both Meghan and Kate have said little officially about the early days of their relationship, Meghan opened up about her relationship with Kate in a 2017 BBC interview.

The interview, filmed shortly after Meghan and Harry’s engagement, showed Meghan actively praising her future sister-in-law as “amazing” during her first days with the royal family.

In the interview, Harry said that both William and his wife were eager to meet Meghan when they discovered the pair were dating.

‘William longed to meet [Meghan] and Catherine too, so you know, as our neighbors we’ve managed to do that a few times and Catherine is absolutely…’ he said.

Meghan quickly intervened, saying Kate had been “amazing.” Harry later added that both William and Charles had been “wonderful” and that the couples had enjoyed “a handful of teas and meetings and all sorts of gatherings” as part of Meghan’s introduction to the royal family.

Despite the fallout from the publication of Endgame, it has been business as usual for the royals this week, with the King presenting a united front with Queen Camilla, Kate and William at the annual pre-Christmas diplomatic reception at Buckingham Palace.

The four most senior members of the British royal family posed for a photo together before the white tie and tiaras event.

Buckingham Palace has not commented publicly, but aides have made it clear that the king and his senior advisers are “considering all options” open to them regarding the baseless claims, including the possibility of legal action.

However, they are comforted by the sympathetic public response they have received to the ‘revelations’ in the poorly reviewed book and may decide to let that speak for itself.

The battle against the royal family has been widely pilloried, even by normally sympathetic media such as the New York Times, which described one chapter as “like a press release concocted by ChatGPT.”

Endgame sold just under 6,500 copies in Britain in its first five days widely, despite a firestorm of publicity – and has now fallen to 215 on Amazon’s ‘best sellers’ list.
