Loyal customers have learned that Matalan – which is located in The Core Shopping Center – would be closing their doors on February 24 (today).

Sad shoppers jumped online to share their anger at having to say goodbye to yet another high street store.

However, the company reminded customers that the shares will still be available online – and aims to retain affected staff.

As reported on a local news sitea company spokesperson said: “We are working closely with our affected colleagues and are doing everything we can to find suitable positions across our local store network.

“Customers in the region will still be able to access our full product range via our website. We would like to thank all our customers in the local community for shopping with us.”

However, the closure is a stark reminder of the public’s fears that high street shopping is disappearing.

And when the news broke, several locals jumped online to express their feelings about the closure.

One user wrote: “Soon there will be nothing left in the city.”

Another wrote: “[In] In fifteen to twenty years there will no longer be a shopping street.”

A third commented: “Use it or lose it. If the footsteps can’t support it, it has to go. Very sad but that’s where we are now.”

The Body Shop will immediately close seven stores

A fourth said: “I can’t believe it. The Leeds I knew is already gone.”

The Matalan branch is one of eight to close recently, as stores in Leicester, Leytonstone and Renfrew all closed for good.

Making matters even more worrying for residents is the news that the entire shopping center it was located in will soon be demolished – meaning the remaining six stores left could also close.

As reported by LeedsLiveit will be partially flattened to make way for new upscale student housing – which has frustrated some local residents.

On Facebook, one user said: “More student housing, how about building social housing or housing to help the homeless and vulnerable.”

And a second user replied: “How many student flats does Leeds need, it’s getting ridiculous now.”

Worrying closures continue to fan the flames of a dystopian future of online-only shopping, leaving Brits worried about jobs and losing the joy of spending the day in their favorite stores.

And the concerns appear well informed, as other businesses have also announced closures this year.

Body shops, Iceland and Lidl have all announced closures this month and as the year progresses more and more stores will be able to say goodbye to their customers.

Figures from the Center for Retail Research show that more than 10,000 stores will close for the last time in 2023, with the loss of almost 120,000 jobs.

Meanwhile, punters are left disappointed after a much-loved electricity company announced it will close one of its stores for good.

In addition, Wetherspoons fans were left sad after a sudden closure earlier this month saw the shutters pulled down on their favorite pub.
