A woman has been shot dead by police after another woman died after being seriously assaulted.
Police were called to Kett Street in Lower Plenty in Melbourne’s north-east about 6.30pm on Friday evening after reports of an altercation between two women.
“Upon police arrival, members were challenged by a woman armed with a knife, who was subsequently shot,” police said in a statement.
“That woman, who has yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.”
The woman is believed to be in her twenties.

The second woman in her 50s who was attacked was treated by first responders but also died at the scene despite frantic efforts to save her life.
Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident and it is believed the parties knew each other.
Detectives from the Homicide Unit will investigate the incident, under the supervision of the Professional Standards Command.
