Madonna has revealed she was put in an induced coma for 48 hours while in hospital with a bacterial infection.

The 65-year-old singer was performing her Celebration tour in Brooklyn, New York, on Saturday night when she opened up about her terrifying health scare in June, which saw her admitted to the intensive care unit after lung and kidney failure.

Addressing the crowd, Madonna personally called out to her friend Shavawn, “There are some very important people in the room tonight who were with me at the hospital. There is a very important woman who dragged me to the hospital.

‘I don’t even remember; I passed out on the bathroom floor and woke up in the intensive care unit… I was in a medically induced coma for 48 hours. She saved my life. Thanks Shavawn.”

Madonna, who has followed Kabbalah – a mystical offshoot of Judaism – since 1996 – then thanked her Kabbalah teacher, who was by her side in hospital, saying he was “the only voice I heard” while she was in a coma.

She revealed: ‘The only voice I heard was his. I heard him say, ‘Squeeze my hand.’

Madonna, mother of Lourdes, 27, Rocco, 23, David, 18, Mercy James, 17, and twins Estere and Stelle, 11, thanked her children for being at the hospital.

She continued, “When I first regained consciousness and saw my six incredible children sitting around me, I almost had to die to get all my children in one room.”

Madonna had her first child Lourdes with then-partner Carlos Leon, an actor and personal trainer, in 1996.

She shares her eldest son Rocco with her ex-husband Guy Ritchie, with the couple welcoming Rocco in August 2000, shortly after they were married.

Madonna and Guy adopted David in 2006 from an orphanage in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe.

Chifundo, ‘Mercy’, James, 17, was adopted by Madonna in 2009 when she was a single mother, again from Malawi.

Madonna recently adopted twin daughters Stella and Estere Ciccone, who were born in Malawi in August 2012 but were adopted five years later in 2017.

The Celebration Tour was scheduled to begin in mid-July with a North American leg passing through more than twenty cities in the United States and Canada.

However, that leg had to be postponed after Madonna’s health suffered a sudden decline that struck fear in the hearts of her global fan base.

She spent several days in intensive care after suffering a “serious bacterial infection,” according to her manager.

A report in Radaronline sensationally claimed that she had suffered acute septic shock and was revived with Narcan, which is commonly used to treat overdoses.

She’s currently on the US leg of her tour and shared a slew of behind-the-scenes photos ahead of her performance in Washington DC on Monday.

Madonna has told fans about her hospital ordeal and while on stage in Paris, she said: ‘I was in hospital. I was in the ICU. My lungs didn’t work, I couldn’t breathe on my own.’

She continued, “My kidneys were failing. I was infected with a bacteria that no one knows anything about. And there is a 40% mortality rate.”

Madonna recalled: ‘When I woke up, I saw all my children around me and I thought this would save me. My children will save me. It’s not me who saved them.’

Guy Oseary, who has been her manager since 2005 and before that her business partner, rushed to her bedside when her health plummeted.

‘My manager came to me and he was standing next to me crying. Two weeks later I came home from the hospital and no one knew when I would get better. “He said, ‘Do you want to go back on the road? Do you want your tour to continue?'” Madonna said.

‘I was breathing oxygen through a cannula through my nose, I could barely get out of bed to walk to the bathroom and I said, ‘Give me two weeks to think about it.’

She reflected, “You know, I consider myself Wonder Woman. I think I can overcome anything, anything except I can show the will this time.”

Madonna added: “I didn’t have the strength. I had no energy, it was taken away from me. So the two weeks passed and I still had hardly any energy. I could drink espressos, four Red Bulls. Nothing woke me up. I had no life force.”

But her “kids saved me,” the Express Yourself singer reiterated. “They kept me going and I recovered faster than most people would.”
