A TESCO store has fixed security labels on pens for just £2.20.
Comparable measures against theft have also been placed on cheap Bic ballpoint pens and pencils.
A cashier in the store Burnley said, “They steal everything here.”
Customer Dylan John, 46, said: “I only went for a ballpoint pen and felt like I was shopping for a Rolex watch.
'Are shoplifters getting that desperate?
“I can imagine a nice bottle of whiskey or champagne having a security tag, but a ballpoint pen set? The world has gone crazy.”
The same store replaced bottles of Champers with photos for customers to take to the checkout after thieves continued to rob the place in 2021.
Other stores have placed tags on everyday essentials such as butter, amid rising thefts during the cost of living crisis.
And recently a pack of four Andrex toilet rolls worth £3.75 was spotted at a Tesco Express in South London with security tags.
Tesco declined to comment.
