Rooney’s former club will take on their Premier League rivals in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Wednesday evening.

Speaking about his new role at the broadcaster, Rooney said: “Watching the BBC’s FA Cup coverage every year was always very special growing up.

“I am so excited to join the team to cover what will undoubtedly be an action-packed match in this historic competition.

“Having played and managed in the league it’s great to be on the other side of the camera this time and hopefully I can bring some of that FA Cup experience to the reporting.”

Rooney, 38, won the FA Cup once as a player (in 2016) and is the Red Devils’ all-time top scorer.

After retiring from football, Rooney moved into football management.

The former Everton star has held positions at Derby, DC United and Birmingham.

He was dismissed from the latter position after just 84 days and 15 games in charge.

Rooney has since been linked with a sensational move into influencer boxing.

However, the former England top scorer denied an immediate move despite talks and said he wanted to focus on his return to management.

Wayne Rooney says he would ‘walk’ to Man Utd rivals if offered assistant manager job

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, he said: “I think at the moment I want to focus on my return to management, not boxing.

“They have been in contact, Misfits have been all over the news. I want to get back into management, that’s my focus.

“My main focus is to get back into football.”

And Rooney has had the door opened for him to be given a role at Manchester City by Pep Guardiola after admitting he would “walk” to the Etihad for a chance to become the ex-Barcelona man’s assistant.

The Man City manager said: “I don’t know where he lives. It’s Cheshire? So it’s close.

“He can come any time, he is more than welcome.”
