Melbourne stabbing: Woman fights for life and three injured as knifeman is arrested

A woman is fighting for her life and three more people are injured after allegedly being stabbed by a man in a random spate of attacks.

The man is alleged to have stabbed four people in three random attacks on the outskirts of inner-city Melbourne over a three-hour period from 10pm on Saturday.

About 10pm, a 24-year-old Melbourne man was attacked outside a burger shop on King Street and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries to his leg.

It is alleged the man stabbed a man and a woman walking along Dandenong Road in St Kilda East shortly before 11pm.

The 31-year-old woman from St Kilda East was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Glen Waverley man, also 31, was also taken to hospital with serious injuries to his arm.

Finally, the man is said to have stabbed a 31-year-old English national on Acland Street in St Kilda at around 12.30pm.

The victim was taken to hospital after suffering a non-life-threatening leg injury in the attack.

Police spotted a man matching the attacker’s description in South Yarra, prompting a foot chase along Powell Street until he was arrested around 1.15am.

The 31-year-old man from Melton remains in custody and is assisting police with their investigation.

Detectives are also investigating whether a stabbing in Southbank may be linked to the spate of overnight attacks.

A 28-year-old man, from Mount Waverely, was stabbed while walking along City Road, near Kings Way, at around 9.20pm.

He suffered non-life-threatening injuries to his leg and torso and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police confirmed the stabbings are not believed to be linked to terrorism and said there was no further danger to the public.

Detectives from the Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit are investigating and would like to speak to witnesses who have not yet provided their details to police.

They are particularly keen to speak to a woman who is believed to have witnessed the stabbing in Southbank but left the scene before speaking to police.
