Miley Cyrus isn't one to shy away from controversy, and her shoe choice at last night's Grammy Awards proved just that.

The 31-year-old Hannah Montana star hit the red carpet at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles last night in a striking custom gold Maison Margiela look, and would it be Margiela without a pair of Tabi shoes?

Miley wore a gold velvet pair of split-toe heels as she posed for cameras before triumphing in the Best Pop Solo Performance and Record of the Year categories for her song Flowers.

Despite critics saying they resemble hooves, the style is popular among celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner and Dua Lipa.

Originating in Japan in the 15th century, Tabi or Jika-tabi is a shoe style that divides the toe to promote balance and extra stability.

Nowadays they have become a status symbol in the fashion world, which means they cost a small fortune.

At Masion Margiela they come in a variety of styles, from ballerinas for £620 to classic Mary-Janes for £920.

And that's if you can get your hands on them at all. Many styles are currently out of stock on the Margiela website, forcing fashionistas to seek out secondary sellers who charge even higher prices.

Dua Lipa styled Tabis for casual outings in a pair of heeled Mary Janes and white socks.

More recently, the shoes received approval from the Kardashian/Jenner dynasty, with Kim, Kris and Kylie each wearing a pair for the Maison Margiela Spring/Summer 2024 show during Paris Fashion Week.

The shoes are so highly sought after that they recently caused a scandal in the fashion community after a woman reported a traumatic Tinder encounter in which her date allegedly snatched her designer shoes and handed them to his girlfriend.

Lexus, known on TikTok as @nextlevellexuss, is a New York City-based creative who sells knitwear through her Maddi and Dannii brands. And the designer recently went viral after exposing her match from hell.

In a Sept. 2 TikTok, Lexus explained how her date stole her coveted Tabi shoes, which had been a birthday gift, and racked up more than 850,000 views in just a few days.

Lexus welcomed the man to her apartment after a date. The next morning, after he left, the influencer noticed her pair of Tabi's were missing.

She went to Tinder to message him and saw that he had her unmatched, which prevented her from contacting him. Lexus searched her phone log and discovered that he had deleted all traces of his number.

She eventually contacted Joshua, who denied stealing the shoes and offered hundreds of dollars to appease her.

“If you offer money, that means you did it. An innocent person wouldn't give $1,000,” she said.

She was shocked to learn that Joshua had a girlfriend and had gifted her the shoes.
