I’m a Millennial Mom, These Are the New Gen Alpha Trends Out There—and the Things My High School Daughter Finds ‘Cringe’

Throwing up a peace sign, wearing skinny leggings and saying “slay” are all on the way out according to millennial moms, who are forced to keep up with whatever’s trendy thanks to their Gen Alpha kids.

Among the bewildered mothers sharing their newfound knowledge on social media is 35-year-old Faith Hitchon from Los Angeles, California.

She started a series on TikTok revealing all the trends she noticed while picking up her young teenage daughter, India, from school, including hoodies and Hello Kitty pimple patches.

Now she’s back with her latest “live trend report update, reporting from the trenches of Gen A’s parenting” — and it’s bad news for high buns and bows.

Posts under her handle @faithhitchthe mother told viewers: “My daughter had some notes and takebacks from my previous videos, so here they are.

“A real blow to the millennial girl personality, she wants me to let you know that having a high bun with a claw clip and some framing pieces is culturally acceptable for Gen A, which makes your entire personality cringe.”

‘I was also asked to point out that not only are skinny jeans completely out of style, but that if you are building a baggy repertoire of trousers, you should be sure to include the Pro Club baggy trousers. ‘

The baggy sweatpants became an instant hit with Gen Alpha after becoming popular on TikTok.

She continues, “Star Face pimple patches remain a form of currency, but there is a hierarchy to that currency – think Pokemon trading cards.

“Hello Kitty is having a big moment and so Hello Kitty Star Face is at the top of the trade pile, and then it depends on the colorways and what’s having a moment.

The millennial trends that are ‘out’ according to Gen Alpha

  • Skinny jeans
  • This makes it your ‘whole personality’ to wear a messy bun with a claw clip
  • The coquette trend
  • Bows
  • Posing with a peace sign
  • Saying ‘death’
  • Leggings
  • Cardigans

“I don’t recommend stacking them like hats, but I also don’t recommend not doing so.”

Shockingly, she reveals that ‘coquette’ and ‘bow culture’ are ‘on the way’, just months after becoming a trend.

The hashtag #coquette has been viewed 18 billion times on TikTok, after fashion fans around the world started wearing hair ties, dainty dresses and lots of pink.

While the official definition of coquette is simply “a flirty woman,” the trend is more about adding little romantic details and a touch of femininity to your outfits — and of course, adding bows to everything.

“What takes its place is the uptight Brandy Melville girl,” she explains.

I added, “I had the wrong assumption that Brandy Melville would be the new version of preppy, but actually Brandy Melville is now seen as edgy and the culture is shifting from coquette to emo, edgy, Brandy girl.

‘Silver jewelry remains more popular than gold, just like having a few piercings in your ear. However, having a full ear cup is deeply millennial and a bit Gen-Z.

“She’s into a nose piercing and some ear piercings, which is much, much cooler — and whatever you do, please don’t tell a Gen A person that you got a belly button piercing because that won’t end well for you.” ‘

Fellow millennials rushed to the comments to share their confusion, with one writing: “Please expand on the Pro Club pants.”

A second added: “Googles Brandy Melville. Realizes I’m SO OLD because the kids and I have different definitions of tense.

A third joked: ‘Pro Club wide trousers?! What is that. These updates are so humbling.”

Others added: ‘I’m Gen X and just can’t stop being shocked by these acne patches! They’re just that much’ and ‘Wait, I thought the coquette trend had just started, I have whiplash’.

Unsurprisingly, the millennial opts for a heart made with their hands, while her daughter uses just two fingers.

The question ‘how would you answer your phone?’ also went in a similar direction, like ‘how do you roll up a car window?’

Another wrote, “I’m a millennial and my daughter is a gen alpha and she puts ‘help’ in front of a sentence and I’m like, why do you say help?”

Meanwhile, a third wondered, “I’m Gen Z and what’s that heart in Gen Alpha?”

Someone else admitted: “I’m Gen Z, none of my answers match either.”

It comes hot on the heels of news that a massive wealth transfer over the next two decades will make millennials “the richest generation in history,” a new report has found.

Millennials in America alone will inherit a massive $90 trillion in property, stocks and other assets over the next two decades, according to real estate consultancy Knight Frank’s annual wealth report.

Baby boomers – born between 1946 and 1964 – and the so-called silent generation – Americans born between 1928 and 1946 – will “hand over the reins” to millennials born between 1980 and 1996, the report said.
