A man has sparked a debate about airplane etiquette after revealing a mother yelled at him for watching an R-rated movie on his phone that made her son cry.
The 19-year-old, who kept his identity anonymous, detailed his awkward in-flight interaction with the angry passenger in a post shared on Reddit’s ‘Am I the hole?forum.
The teen explained that he was flying to visit his parents and had downloaded a few movies on his smartphone, including the 2018 film Deadpool 2. superhero movie starring Ryan Reynolds.
“I was watching it on my phone with headphones in, when the part where Deadpool gets ripped in half happens, and I hear a (muffled) scream behind me,” he wrote.

He explained that he was watching Deadpool 2 (pictured) and was unaware that the boy sitting behind him was looking at his screen until he burst into tears.
‘I grab my headphones and there’s a little kid behind me crying. He had positioned himself so he could look at my screen and watched as he was being mauled.”
Not only was the child upset, but the boy’s mother also blamed the man for watching the R-rated movie on his personal device.
“His mother got angry with me and yelled at me not to watch things like that, especially in front of children,” he recalls.
“But I didn’t know anyone was watching me, and that kid would have to force himself into that weird position to see my phone screen.”
The man later edited his message to explain that it was a six-hour afternoon flight and that the child in question was approximately six years old or younger.
‘I honestly don’t know if the mother noticed [him watching my screen] and just let it slide until it backfired on her,” he added.
The Reddit user ended his post by asking if he was wrong for watching an R-rated movie during the flight.
“So, am I an asshole?” he asked.

Many also agreed that the mother was to blame, as she should have kept an eye on her son.
‘She should have looked after her own child. She was glad he was taken [until] it failed and decided to pass the blame,” one person responded.
‘I’m a parent and I hate parents like that. No one else is responsible for what your child watches,” says another.
Some people pointed out that the child wasn’t sitting next to him, but others argued that it didn’t matter where he was on the flight.
‘I see a lot of comments that say, “well, if the child was next to him…” … if the child was next to him, behind him, at seven o’clock, it doesn’t matter. Children and people with children are not allowed to monitor anything,” said one user.
The man explained in the comments that his unpleasant interaction with the mother was quickly diffused by a flight attendant.
“I’m not really a confrontational person, so I didn’t tell her much more than the reasoning I gave,” he wrote. ‘And because there was shouting, a flight attendant came and after some talking the situation was resolved.’
