MS Dhoni Birthday: An event celebrated like no other athlete in India

New Delhi: If there was ever another sports holiday in India, it would probably be Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s birthday. While that is an exaggeration, though marginal, there is no denying that Dhoni’s birthday has taken on the proportions of a national event, celebrated by almost all cricket enthusiasts whether they follow his franchise or not. Very few players have had such an impact on the sport in India over the years and as things stand, the effect and influence will last for a long time to come.

As the former skipper of India and the leader and sweetheart of the Chennai Super King (CSK) celebrates his 42nd birthday, one can only step back and acknowledge his contribution to the sport.

Dhoni, the last captain to take home an ICC trophy, has set markers that have not even been approached, let alone crossed, since. From the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 to the iconic ICC World Cup victory in 2011 and the Champions Trophy two years later, Dhoni has a cabinet as complete as any skipper in India could dream of.

The man’s sheer presence and composure on the pitch was and remains folklore as the veteran, who was certainly about to end his playing days soon, took home the Indian Premier League (IPL) title for CSK this year, leaving fans in delirium and earning respect even from the most die-hard opponent.

Questions about his retirement have been around for years and Dhoni himself, however, has put a little teaser on the whole situation. But as of now, it’s not something we really need to get over. It will come when the time comes.

MS Dhoni’s legacy will last long after he hangs up his gloves, both species. Even then, his presence will be seen and felt. As he celebrates another milestone in his life, Dhoni continues to rule the sport, and will continue to do so for a long time to come.
