A mother took her laptop to a repair shop after struggling to connect to the internet for days, only to be told the Wi-Fi button had been disabled.

Sally Newall-Sanderson, 44, had reset the laptop, deleted programs and called her broadband provider to try to get to the bottom of the problem.

The recruitment company director was about to pay £600 for a new laptop when she took it to a repair shop.

But minutes later she was embarrassed when the store called and told her what was happening.

Sally said: “I didn’t know these buttons on the side of laptops existed.

“It worked fine, but suddenly it didn’t anymore.

“A message came up saying I couldn’t get WiFi.

“I panicked because I’m not very good with computers. I’m not tech savvy at all.

“For about three or four days I called the broadband company to see if there was anything wrong with my broadband. How embarrassing.

“It was about day four and I thought, ‘Okay, I’ve got to book it somewhere.’

“As soon as I dropped it off and left they called me and had to explain it was just the WiFi button on the side. All my laptops I’ve had, I’ve never noticed that before. I felt ridiculous.”

The mother-of-three, from Warrington, Cheshire, added: “I caught it, or maybe my little girl caught it while he was messing around. My oldest son, who is 15, said, “For God’s sake, Mom, you’re so embarrassing.”

‘But even they wouldn’t have known. We could all have sat here for weeks trying to solve the problem.”

Sally wrote about it online: “Please put me out of my misery and tell me. Did you know this switch?

“I’m not the only one who didn’t know this, am I?”
