Kathmandu: At least 128 people have tragically died in Nepal following a powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake that struck the country late Friday evening. Many others have been injured, some of whom are in critical condition. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed condolences over the loss of lives and damage in the neighboring country and offered all possible assistance at this tragic time. He emphasized that India stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal.

Responding to X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote: “Deeply saddened by the loss of life and damage caused by the Nepal earthquake. India stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal and is ready to provide all possible assistance. Our thoughts are with the relatives and we wish the injured a speedy recovery.”

Meanwhile, Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has left for earthquake-affected areas.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has expressed deep sorrow over the human and material damage caused by the earthquake at Ramidanda in Jajarkot on Friday evening at 11.47 am and mobilized all three security agencies for the immediate rescue and relief of the injured.

The National Earthquake Measurement Center identified the epicenter of the earthquake in the Lamidanda area of ​​Jajarkot district. According to Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s office, all three security agencies have been mobilized for immediate rescue and relief operations. The Ministry of Interior stated that injuries and damage to property came from other districts of Salyan, Dailekh and Rolpa. It is notable that the Jajarkot district is located approximately 500 kilometers west of Kathmandu.

Earthquake stuck Delhi-NCR

Delhi-NCR was also hit by heavy tremors on Friday evening. There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage, according to local officials. Strong tremors were felt in several regions in northern India, including Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Many residents shared videos on social media to document the event.

The quake with epicenter in the Lamidanda area of ​​Jajarkot district occurred at 11:47 p.m., according to National Earthquake Measurement Center officials. The National Center for Seismology said the earthquake’s epicenter was in Nepal, about 227 km north of Ayodhya and 331 km west northwest of Kathmandu. The focal depth of the earthquake was 10 km, the NCS added.

Strong tremors were felt in parts of Noida and Greater Noida bordering Delhi, forcing several people living in high-rise buildings to evacuate their buildings.

Earthquakes are common in Nepal.

On October 3, Nepal was hit by a series of earthquakes, the most powerful of which measured 6.2. These tremors were felt in several parts of northern India, including the Delhi-NCR region.

About a year earlier, in November 2022, the Doti district was hit by an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale, resulting in the loss of six lives. This event was part of a series of earthquakes that struck the country.

Nepal suffered a devastating earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale in 2015, killing more than 12,000 people and causing extensive damage to about 1 million structures in the mountainous country.
