Nick Kyrgios in playful mood with girlfriend Costeen Hatzi as Aussie tennis bad boy gears up for Wimbledon after hell of injuries

  • Nick Kyrgios trained for Wimbledon on Wednesday
  • The Aussie has played just one game all year after struggling with a knee injury
  • Kyrgios underwent knee surgery in January and may not be fit for Wimbledon

Nick Kyrgios looked relaxed training at Wimbledon as his girlfriend Costeen Hatzi kept a close eye on progress.

The Australian reached the final of Wimbledon last year – his first appearance in the final of a Grand Slam tournament – where he was eventually defeated by Novak Djokovic in four sets.

However, his performance at the All England Club this year remains in doubt after he pulled out of the lead-up events the Halle Open and Mallorca Open due to his ongoing knee injury.

But the 28-year-old was spotted at Wimbledon on Wednesday afternoon, just five days before the start of the tournament.

He was joined by Hatzi and the pair appeared to be smiling and joking during a break in training.

Kyrgios has played just one game this year after undergoing surgery for the injury that kept him out of the Australian Open in January.

The Aussie star sensationally pulled out of the tournament due to a knee injury just a day before he was due to play his first round match against Roman Safiullin.

During an emotional press conference at Melbourne Park, Kyrgios’ physiotherapist Will Maher explained a routine MRI performed after Kyrgios suffered a knee injury and revealed he had a tear in his lateral meniscus and a cyst.

“There is a parameniscus cyst growing in his left meniscus, which is the result of a small tear in his lateral meniscus,” he said.

“Even at that stage it was still worth pushing through to see if there was anything we could do to get him back on track.”

Earlier this month, Kyrgios pulled out of Halle as his knee continued to bother him and then withdrew from the Mallorca event last week.

“Super disappointed that I can’t compete in Mallorca,” he said in a video post.

“I still have a lot to do with my body at the moment and with Wimbledon just around the corner I can hopefully get healthy for that.”

The 28-year-old has only played one match this season, earlier this month in Stuttgart, where he was beaten by Wu Yibing, feeling pain in his knee at almost every point.

When asked if Kyrgios was fit to play at Wimbledon, Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley said ‘he is’, but clarified that he would know better once he spoke to him in London this week.

“Nick likes the grass,” Tiley said Tuesday.

“He was in the final and I was there pretty much every one of these games on the road and he got better and better as the event went on – he does it on grass.

“He likes that surface. He loves to play games and I know he wants nothing more than to be ready to play Wimbledon.’
