Nikki Haley wins Vermont, her second victory against Trump

Nikki Haley won the Republican primary in Vermont, according to The Associated Press, giving her her second victory of the 2024 campaign and her first — and perhaps only — victory in a Super Tuesday state.

Her triumph won’t halt former President Donald J. Trump’s steady rise to Republican presidential nominee so far, but it does signal her limited strength in places with large numbers of young people, college-educated voters and independents.

In recent days, Ms. Haley had pointed to that small but important base of support as a reason why she had not dropped her bid. Her campaign had hoped to chart a winning path for her in Michigan and in 11 Super Tuesday states where Republican primaries are not limited to voters affiliated with the party. But that strategy was largely a failure. Her only victory until Tuesday was in Washington, D.C., where she made history on Sunday as the only Republican woman to ever win a presidential primary or caucus.

In Vermont, which has an open primary, Ms. Haley won the support of Gov. Phil Scott, a moderate who has said he did not vote for Trump in any of his previous bids for the White House, and in 2019 he became the first Republican governor who supported Trump’s impeachment.

While Vermont is home to an independent electorate, Ms. Haley had followed the former president there before the election more than 30 points.
