New Delhi: Northern India has been experiencing severe cold conditions for over a month now and the falling temperatures are accompanied by cold winds and dense fog; the latter results in poor or no visibility. The adverse weather conditions have negatively affected rail and flight operations, causing long delays and even flight cancellations. Delhi Airport regularly issues advisories to passengers due to continuous delays due to weather, but it appears that there will be no delays due to weather now. The reason for this is the second runway of the Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI). which is now operational with the special CAT III technology. Know everything about it…

Delhi IGI Airport second runway operational

As mentioned earlier, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) on Saturday announced the successful completion of the relining and renovation works of Runway 10/28 (RWY 10/28 – also known as the Second Runway) at Indira Gandhi International Airport. According to airport sources, the runway has been handed over to the air traffic control (ATC) for commercial operations from February 3, 2024.

No more flight delays due to winter weather? Know why

According to Jyotiraditya Scindia, Civil Aviation Minister of India, in a social media post on 'X' (formerly known as Twitter): “The CAT III compliant runway 10/28 at Delhi Airport became operational today. This would further reduce weather-related congestion problems.” The CAT III technology on the runway prevents winter-related flight delays as this technology includes an advanced suite of Instrumental Landing System (ILS) capabilities specifically designed to ensure safe landing of aircraft in weather conditions that lead to poor visibility such as fog, snow and/or rain.

Re-carpeting, runway rehabilitation work completed

DIAL had carried out the much-needed relining work of the 3,813 meters and 45 meters wide second runway in mid-September 2023, just after the conclusion of the historic G20 Summit. The runway re-carpeting was completed in December 2023, following which the operationalization of Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) was initiated. DIAL carried out the rehabilitation works of runway 10/28 for better passenger experience, including introduction of a few additional taxiways.

With the rehabilitation works completed, Delhi Airport now has a total of four functional runways, making the airport future-proof and able to operate at full capacity.
