The men continue to beat the conductor in the crowded bus, even as some passengers look on in shock while others try to pull the attackers off him and stop the attack. However, the five men continue to attack Mookaiyan while shouting abuse and threats at him.

According to reports, Mookaiyan was involved in a verbal altercation with a female passenger after she missed her stop at the Varaganeri Chulaikarai Mariyamman Temple. The private bus operates on the Chathiram to Thuvakudi route.

The conductor had dropped her off a little further than her intended destination, which led to an argument between him and the passenger.

However, when the bus returned to Chathiram bus stand, five men boarded the vehicle and assaulted Mookaiyan, accusing him of misconduct and verbally abusing the female passenger. The assailants also allegedly tried to snatch the conductor's money bag after the attack, reports said.

The man was eventually rescued by some female passengers on board the bus, who protected him from the attackers and prompted them to back off and leave him alone.

Later, the conductor filed a complaint against the five men with the Gandhi Market Police.

An official said that based on the victim's complaint, a case has been registered against the five men and efforts are on to identify and arrest them.

Further investigations are underway, the official added.
