Adrianne Palicki offered a surprising insight into how The Orville‘s delayed filming schedule took its toll on the cast.
During the Tuesday, November 28 episode of Michael Rosenbaum‘Inside of You’ podcastPalicki, 40, hinted that the space saga will not return for a fourth season.
“No, I don’t do that anymore,” she responded to a question about it The Orvillewhich hasn’t released any new episodes on Hulu since August 2022. “I really don’t know the answer to that [if it was canceled].”
Created by Seth MacFarlane, the science fiction series follows the crew of starship USS Orville as they have adventures while exploring different parts of the galaxy. MacFarlane, 50, stars in the show alongside PalickiPenny Johnson Jerald, Halston Sage, Scott Grimes, Peter Macon, J. Lee, Mark Jackson, Jessica Szohr And Anna Winters.
According to Palicki, the show has become “really difficult” to film. She pointed to the fact that The Orville filmed 33 episodes over the course of six years, which doesn’t allow the cast to have a stable income stream as that equates to about 5 episodes per year.
“It became a real problem because there was so much time between seasons because Seth wanted to write everything himself,” Palicki continued. “At one point we were like, ‘We have to fight with the studio to give us a retainer fee or something.'”
The actress, who played Commander Kelly Grayson, used Lee’s off-screen experience as an example, adding, “J. Lee ate saltines and gatorade at one point because we just couldn’t afford anything. It was horrible.”
MacFarlane has previously noted that his busy schedule has caused long gaps between seasons.
“How can I incorporate this into everything else that’s happening right now?” he told TVLine in August 2022, citing his commitment to projects such as Family man and Peacock is coming Ted series. “I will say that I get as emotionally invested in the show as any of the fans do, so I will find a way to do it if there is a season 4.”
Earlier this year, the outlet received an update on this The Orville‘s future of the president of Disney Television Group. “It’s a great show and I know the fans loved having it back in their lives. And Seth has done a great job, in as unique a way as he can, in front of and behind the camera,” Craig Erwich said in January. “But right now we have nothing to share.”
MacFarlane told it too We weekly in the past about the pressure of returning to a project.
“It’s scary to start a brand new season because you’ve just written a whole bunch of episodes, which you’re probably proud of and feel good about, and then you have to do it all over again,” he said in 2018 forward The Orvillesecond season premiere. “There’s always that scary thought in the back of your mind: ‘Oh, s–t. We’ve used up all the stories, and there are no more. ”
He continued: “You always want every season to grow, to be bigger and better, and this season definitely fits that bill. I think it will really surprise people how the show has expanded and really come into its own.
