The train, which headed towards Barrow, Cumbriacame off the job at Grange-over-Sands.

There were four customers and four employees working at the time.

No one was injured in the incident, the railway company said.

All lines between Barrow-in-Furness and Lancaster, Lancashire, are now blocked – including routes there and back Manchester Airport.

Commuters can expect disruption until the end of the day.

Northern regional director Craig Harrop said: “We are focused on supporting colleagues and customers involved in the incident and minimizing the disruption this incident will cause to other services.

“We are working closely with Network Rail and others to gain a better understanding of what happened.”

Ticket restrictions have been lifted, meaning passengers with passes can now board other trains such as Transpennine Express and Avanti.

However, travelers are urged to reconsider their trip and only travel if necessary.
