And the former Barcelona boss says the door is always open for the ‘Red Devil’ as he looks to get his managerial career on track.

He is flattered that Rooney spoke so highly of him after achieving so much during his playing days.

Asked about Rooney’s comments, Guardiola, 53, said: “I don’t know where he lives. It’s Cheshire? So it’s close.

“He can come any time, he is more than welcome.”

Guardiola spent eight years in England and knows how highly regarded Rooney – who has had spells at the helm of Derby, Washington DC and Birmingham City – was as a player.

He said: “For our city he is of course important, but he is a Red Devil, he is United, but of course it is fun for all of us.

“Wayne Rooney is one of the greatest of all time in this country, so when he compliments all of us it’s nice.

‘He’s worked here for many years, so he knows.

“He has won a lot of Premier Leagues.

“That means he knows how hard it is to be up there and therefore he knows how hard it is.”

Fans are all noticing something strange in the background of Pep Guardiola’s press conference at Manchester City

Rooney suggested Guardiola would be a good manager to learn from.

The retired striker also pointed to the work Mikel Arteta is doing at Arsenal.

The manager has rebuilt the Gunners since his appointment in 2019.

Arteta was Guardiola’s assistant coach for three years.

Rooney said: “You see what Arteta is doing now and I strongly believe a big part of that comes from learning what Guardiola did and so it depends on what the situation is.”
